Minute 0-15: Application and Soft Pull
The initial application takes 5-15 minutes. As a bad credit applicant, you'll provide identity information (name, SSN, DOB, address), employment details, income, bank account credentials for verification, and how much you'd like to borrow.
OppLoans performs a soft credit inquiry at this stage — this does NOT affect your credit score. You'll receive a preliminary decision within a few minutes, showing your maximum loan amount and APR range.
Minute 15-30: Bank Verification
If you accept the preliminary offer, OppLoans verifies your bank account via Plaid or a similar aggregator. You'll log in with your online banking credentials, and OppLoans reviews the past 90 days of transactions to confirm income, employer, and any red flags like frequent overdrafts.
This verification is where many applications stall. If your bank uses two-factor authentication that Plaid can't handle, or if your income deposits are irregular, human review is required — this can add 24-72 hours.
Hour 1-4: Final Underwriting Decision
For clean applications with verified income and no red flags, final approval comes within 1-4 hours. You'll receive an email with the final loan documents, including the APR, term, monthly payment schedule, and total repayment amount.
Review this carefully. The final APR can be higher than the preliminary range if underwriting identifies additional risk factors. You have the right to decline the offer at this stage with no obligation.
Hour 4-24: Signing and Funding
After you e-sign the loan documents, funding is initiated via ACH transfer. If you sign before OppLoans' 12:00 PM Central Time cutoff on a business day, funds typically arrive the same day.
Signing after the cutoff or on a weekend/holiday means next-business-day funding — usually 24-48 hours from signing.
What Delays Approval
For bad credit borrowers, common reasons applications get stuck: (1) inconsistent employer name between application and bank deposits, (2) income that doesn't clearly meet the $1,500/month minimum, (3) recent bank account NSF fees suggesting cash flow instability, (4) address mismatch between ID and utility records, (5) frozen credit file that blocks the soft pull.
If your application is under review for more than 48 hours, call customer service. Ask specifically what documentation would resolve the delay — usually it's a recent pay stub or utility bill.
If You're Denied
OppLoans denials come with a formal Adverse Action Notice (required by federal law) explaining why you were declined. Read this document carefully — it typically cites factors like insufficient income, recent overdrafts, or credit report items that made underwriting decline the loan.
You can reapply after 30-60 days if your situation improves. In the meantime, consider our list of OppLoans alternatives that use different underwriting criteria.
Bottom Line
Same-day funding is genuinely achievable with OppLoans, but only if your bank verification is clean and you submit before the mid-day cutoff. Applications submitted late Friday afternoon typically fund Monday or Tuesday. Plan your application timing around your actual cash flow need.
