First: No Late Fee
Unlike most bad credit lenders, OppLoans, unlike many bad credit lenders, does not charge a late fee for missed payments. This is a genuinely borrower-friendly policy and one of the few things that distinguishes OppLoans from payday lenders and other high-APR products.
However, 'no late fee' does not mean 'no consequences.' Missed payments still trigger internal collection processes, and after 30 days can affect your credit.
Day 1-5: Failed ACH and First Contact
If your ACH payment fails due to insufficient funds, OppLoans typically retries the withdrawal within 3-5 business days. During this window, you may receive automated calls, emails, and text messages asking you to update your payment method or arrange a manual payment.
This is the best time to act. Call customer service, explain your situation, and ask about a payment deferral or hardship arrangement. OppLoans has a documented hardship program that can pause payments for up to 90 days in qualifying situations.
Day 15: Interest Accrues, Collection Escalates
By day 15, interest continues to accrue on the missed payment amount at your loan's APR. On a $2,500 loan at 160% APR, that's roughly $11 in interest per day.
Collection contact escalates — expect more frequent calls and possibly letters. Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) protections apply, so document all contacts and know your right to request written verification of the debt.
Day 30: Credit Bureau Reporting
This is the pivotal moment. If your payment is 30+ days past due at your next credit reporting cycle, OppLoans will report the delinquency to TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian.
A single 30-day late payment can drop a good FICO score by 60-90 points. A score in the 700s can crash into the low 600s from one missed payment. This mark stays on your report for seven years, though its impact fades over time if you don't add new delinquencies.
Day 60-90: Serious Delinquency
At 60 days, a second late notation appears on your credit report. At 90 days, the account may be marked 'seriously delinquent' — a signal to future lenders that this borrower has cash flow problems.
OppLoans may also refer the account to an internal or external collection agency at this stage. If a third-party collector takes over, additional negative credit reporting occurs and your legal exposure changes.
How to Recover
The best action is immediate contact with OppLoans customer service. Options they may offer include: (1) a payment deferral of one bi-weekly cycle, (2) a temporarily reduced payment amount for 30-60 days, (3) enrollment in their formal hardship program, or (4) a settlement offer if the account has already gone to collections.
In writing, request a 'goodwill deletion' of any late-payment notation once you're current — this is not guaranteed but is sometimes granted for first-time missed payments by otherwise reliable customers.
Bottom Line
OppLoans' no-late-fee policy is genuinely helpful, but the 30-day credit reporting threshold is where real financial damage occurs. If you miss a payment, don't wait for a call — reach out to customer service the same day. Document every conversation in writing and never send a payment before confirming what account it will be applied to.
